Green Event Programme and Certification

Our latest scheme, which will be a registered trademark from 2021!

In order to achieve environmental sustainability, we need to look at different aspects when organising an event. Knowledge of the principles of sustainable organisation and compliance with the questions below are prerequisites for obtaining the certification. The certification scheme is based on the Certified Green Office Workplace and Green Office Programme, developed and launched by the KÖVET Association in 2009.

Basic conditions for organisation:

The organisation knows and follows the principles of sustainable event management.
The organisation has a coordinator responsible for the implementation of environmental and social sustainability.
Our organisation has prepared an environmental guideline for events to start organising events based on the guidelines set out in the guideline.
Our organisation’s environmental event management covers all phases: planning, preparation, implementation and follow-up.
The Green Operations and Procurement Policy is available to all partners, subcontractors and employees of the event and is public.
Our employees are regularly trained and informed to increase their awareness.
The environmental principles of the event are supported by the management.
Compliance with the principles is ensured by an action plan for continuous improvement. We strive to improve our environmental performance from event to event.

The Green Event Programme and Certification looks at the environmental aspects of the event, including its location, catering, transport and materials, communication, energy use and pollution prevention. Organising a green event can benefit both the event organiser and the participants for the following reasons:

reducing material use and waste: through careful planning, a waste plan
planning, waste prevention;
Increasing the environmental awareness of participants: through information materials, venue design,
presenting new solutions and practices;
reducing costs: by simple solutions such as brochures, paper leaflets, careful
Costs can be saved by simple solutions such as designing or possibly omitting paper leaflets and brochures, or by sourcing local food;
enhancing the reputation of the organisation: by raising awareness among event participants and the organiser’s partners and clients
the Green Event helps to spread environmental awareness;
support for decision-makers: the Green Event Certification scheme covers these areas,
areas that need to be addressed by the organiser/decision maker, thus also acting as a decision support tool
It can be seen as a decision support tool;
Good practice: the organiser sets a good example for other similar green events,
good practices to meet expectations and contribute to a wide dissemination of good practice
to become widely accepted practice;
promotes the uptake of environmentally friendly products/services: in the organisation of events
products/services procured during the organisation of an event will drive the market towards more environmentally friendly solutions,
strengthen the supply side in this area.

To achieve this, KÖVET has developed the Green Event Certification Scheme, whereby the organisation and delivery of an event is assessed against criteria in 11 thematic areas of environmental and social responsibility. After completing the rating table and an on-site audit of the event, the event is rated on a 5-point scale. If it meets the criteria, it will be awarded the title of Certified Green Event, receive a certificate of achievement, use the Certified Green Event logo and be informed of areas for improvement in the form of a report.
