More Sustainable Exports, More Competitive SMEs

– international cooperation with Hungarian and Slovenian export development organizations –

Funded by the European Union’s Technical Support Instrument (TSI), this project aims to strengthen support for Hungarian and Slovenian export-oriented small and medium-sized enterprises, with a particular focus on sustainability, ESG compliance, and green innovation. The initiative supports the work of the Hungarian Export Development Agency (HEPA) and SPIRIT Slovenia to help SMEs succeed in international markets and become more competitive in the long term.

Why is this project needed?

Hungarian and Slovenian exporting SMEs are facing increasingly stringent sustainability and ESG requirements in international markets. For many businesses, the complex regulatory environment, limited internal resources, and the fragmentation of available support programs pose significant challenges. Additionally, companies’ levels of sustainability readiness vary widely, which hinders uniform development and market entry.

The project addresses these challenges: its goal is to strengthen SMEs’ sustainability readiness, improve access to green financing opportunities, and enhance the capacities of institutions that support exports. The initiative aligns closely with the EU’s priorities related to the green and digital transitions, as well as to strengthening competitiveness.

What does the grant cover?

The project is funded by the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Support to Structural Reforms (DG REFORM), and implementation is carried out by an international consortium led by Trinomics in partnership with the KÖVET Association, the Technopolis Group, and the Center of Business Excellence (CBE) at the University of Ljubljana.

Among other things, the following activities will be carried out as part of the program:

Expected Results

  • a comprehensive assessment of current export support and sustainability systems,
  • mapping of international best practices,
  • a study tour to a leading EU trade promotion organization,
  • development of an AI-powered IT tool,
  • personalized professional recommendations,
  • targeted training for beneficiaries.

The project helps SMEs respond more effectively to sustainability requirements, access green financing opportunities more efficiently, and achieve a stronger position in international markets.

In the longer term, this supports the green transition, increases export competitiveness, and lays the foundation for more sustainable economic growth in Hungary and Slovenia.
