LIFE19 CCA/HU/001320 LIFE-CLIMCOOP Cities and local businesses working together for climate adaptation
The climate is changing. Let’s adapt together! Local adaptation – to global climate change. Cooperative solutions for local climate adaptation by cities and businesses.
To adapt to and mitigate the inevitable impacts of climate change, it is necessary to identify opportunities for action and to take exemplary steps through concrete cooperation between cities and industrial zones.
The general objective of the LIFE-CLIMCOOP project is to develop, test and disseminate public-private partnerships, urban and business cooperation, where stakeholders act collectively to reduce local climate risks and take steps to strengthen joint climate adaptation in vulnerable urban and business areas in the region, in Hungary and in similar socio-economic areas in Eastern Europe. The project will establish the above cooperation between the City of Kazincbarcika and BorsodChem Zrt., together with the consortium partners supporting the cooperation, namely the Institute of Chemistry of the University of Miskolc, the Department of the National Adaptation Centre of the MBFSZ, KÖVET Association for Sustainable Economy and GeoGold Carpathian Ltd.
The project will prepare a joint adaptation climate strategy for Kazincbarcika and BorsodChem Zrt. based on a climate change vulnerability assessment, a methodological guide and an online adaptation good practice toolkit to facilitate the development of joint adaptation climate strategies for other municipalities and industrial companies in Hungary and the EU.
Kazincbarcika and BorsodChem Zrt. will develop and operate cooperation mechanisms to promote climate change measures, establish a Climate Change Platform as a coordinating body, form a Future Research Group to increase climate awareness and knowledge base, and launch a unique climate fund to support local small-scale low-cost adaptation measures. Implementation of small-scale nature-based adaptation measures will include rainwater management, expansion of urban green spaces, green roofs, conversion of former industrial sites into multifunctional adaptation assets, creation of ecological corridors, and a climate-responsive update of the urban irrigation plan.
The project will also develop and test smart adaptation tools to increase the adaptive capacity and knowledge base of the population, and prepare a joint heat alert plan between the city and BorsodChem. A prototype will be developed for the reuse of grey water from various sources (industrial wastewater, municipal rainwater, treated municipal wastewater) to optimise the use of water by BorsodChem Zrt.
The resulting water management model and adaptation cooperation practice will be used to replicate the results of the project (in Hungary and in the EU), thus facilitating the development of further public-private partnerships.
In addition to the implementation activities, the project will also include extensive education, knowledge transfer, communication and outreach activities to disseminate the results of the project widely. A wide range of monitoring activities will ensure the progress of the project results and the follow-up of the environmental, social and economic impacts during the project and in the post-project period.
The KÖVET Association has been involved as a collaborating partner in the technical work, communication and dissemination of the project process and results, and in the involvement of follow-up partners.
