Ecological footprint

The ecological footprint

The ecological footprint is the most comprehensive measure of biological capacity. It summarises human demands on productive land – food, building materials, organic matter, carbon sequestration and infrastructure. Currently, carbon emissions from burning account for 61% of humanity’s ecological footprint.

The Overshoot Day

This is the day when humanity’s demand for available natural resources exceeds the supply our Earth can replenish. This date was 29 July in 2019 and 22 August in 2020, so the COVID-19 pandemic “helped” to push the date back by more than 3 weeks. The overshoot day is calculated annually by the Global Footprint Network (GFN), an international research organisation, comparing the Earth’s biocapacity for a given year with humanity’s ecological footprint.

About Global Footprint Network

The GFN is an international sustainability organisation that helps us stay within our Earth’s capacity and provides answers to climate change. Since 2003, we have been providing insight into the science in more than 50 countries, 30 cities and 70 partners worldwide. We are influencing legislative and investment decisions and together we are working to create a future where we all have a place to live on our only planet. KÖVET Association for a Sustainable Economy has been a member of GFN since 2007. www.gfn.org
