Carbon footprint calculation

The carbon footprint calculation is carried out using the Bilan Carbone® methodology, mainly for companies, institutions and municipalities. This methodology complies with ISO 14069, the GHG Protocol and the CDP guidelines.

Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an urgent goal for all organisations in line with the EU Green Deal targets. The European Commission has adopted a package of proposals to ensure that EU climate, energy, transport and tax policies are capable of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels. Accordingly, all organisations are encouraged to stick at least to the commitments for the period, but can of course set more ambitious targets.

The carbon footprint calculation is a much more streamlined and transparent version of the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) method, which takes climate change alone into account among the environmental impacts. Its basic logic is to measure and quantify the amount of materials and services used in operations and to assign each category to an emission factor (greenhouse gas emissions per unit of resource use).

The methodology divides the carbon footprint into Scope 1, Scope 2, Scope 3, where Scope 1 represents direct on-site greenhouse gas emissions (point source, combustion equipment, company cars), Scope 2 represents purchased energy (electricity, natural gas, district heating), and Scope 3 represents indirect GHG emissions (all purchases, deliveries and deliveries, employee commuting, purchased goods and services) that can be linked to the organisation, excluding financed emissions.

Climate change is caused not only by CO2, but by a long list of greenhouse gases, the final result of a carbon footprint calculation is expressed in CO2 equivalent units.

Bilan Carbone® is a methodology developed by ADEME, the French Environment Agency and ABC (Assocation Bilan Carbone).

It consists in determining the natural rate of the activities, purchases, logistical performances, etc., detailed below, and then assigning a unit emission factor to obtain the cumulative result. In some cases (typically services used) the monetary value is converted into CO2eq.
